What gave rise to the idea of creating a machine to record sales and print out receipts?
We would like to share with you the story of its creation.
The first cash register was patented on November 4, 1879 by James Ritty, owner of a popular saloon in Ohio. Despite a large number of customers, the saloon was unprofitable - much of the profits ended up in the pockets of unscrupulous employees. James tried changing and monitoring employees, but to no avail. One day, while travelling on a steamship, James Ritty looked into the engine room where he noticed a tool counting the revolutions of the propeller. This gave him the idea of creating a machine that would record each sale in the saloon. On his return, James Ritty designed the first cash register. It was later improved several times: a cash drawer and a paper roll were added. The latter was punched with holes to keep track of sales.
In 1881, Ritty sold the patent and returned to running the saloon, where the story of the great invention once began.
