Mary Anderson. Windshield wiper blade

In the winter of 1902 visiting New York City Mary Anderson noticed the driver of a tram trying to make his way through the snowstorm with both windows open to be able to see the road. Back home she hired an engineer and they designed a hand-operated windshield wiper to be installed and controlled inside a vehicle. The device consisted of a lever attached to a rubber blade which moved back and forth across the outside of the windshield. A counterweight was used to ensure contact between the wiper and the window. In 1903 Mary Anderson was granted a patent for her invention but the automobile industry paid attention to it after the patent rights had already expired. In 1922 Cadillac became the first car manufacturer to adopt Mary Anderson’s windshield wipers as standard equipment.
